Northside Hospital | Cherokee Imaging Center

The objective was to provide a new offering of outpatient imaging services at an existing hospital campus housing a large array of imaging technology, including MRI, Spec CT, CT, R&F Rooms, as well as a full complement of women’s imaging services. The suite was designed with two distinct entry points, one leading to a women’s waiting area and the other to a general imaging waiting area, but both connected by crossover clinical and support areas.

A demanding construction schedule was by far the biggest challenge for this project. Another challenge was the construction of the imaging treatment rooms. Due to equipment installation sequencing and technical support / preparation needed for proper equipment function and calibration, timing was of utmost important to coordinate with the schedule. These rooms needed to be completely operable at an early stage of the project, while construction for the remainder of the suite followed a later completion schedule. It was important to incorporate the original design philosophy for the main hospital; “Where Metro Meets The Mountains”, while also creating an independent identity for each suite.

Rust and wood accents tie in hues from surrounding areas of the hospital, while at the same time picking up tones from the local rural area. Metal finish accents and a distinct geometric floor pattern incorporates the remote technology aspect, driven by the growth of the metropolitan area.

The finishes and furniture selected for the women’s waiting area and the general waiting area were intended to correlate with one another but allow each area to have its own visual identity. The metal mosaic wall frames the accent wall and the front of the reception area, complementing the curved bronze accent tile selection to give a more feminine feel to the women’s waiting room. Conversely, lines on the corrugated bronze accent tile and on the metallic laminate at front reception give the general waiting room a more gender neutral feel.

The resulting design delivered an across-the-board space that serves both, men and women, young and old. Even though there are two distinct entry points, the design concept and finish selection make the spaces relatable to one another while the integration of color tones, wood, metallic accents and the artwork selection, inspired by iconic local landmarks, help the space stay true to its original design philosophy and surroundings, while offering highly technical, cutting edge imaging services.
